VPR Classical is more than just a radio station. It’s cultural institution that supports its creative community, and this April in conjunction with Public Radio Music Month, it’s launching its Student Composer Showcase series to celebrate student composers from the Vermont region. “VPR Classical is committed to engaging with younger audiences and showcasing talented musicians of all ages in our region,” said VPR Classical Host Joe Goetz.

The first student composer is Justin Gates, a senior in high school. His piece, “What I Knew Would Come,” was written last summer at the String Quartet Project, a program for young composers run by Music-COMP and Vermont composer Erik Nielsen, in conjunction with Burlington Ensemble.

The series is the result of a collaboration with Music-COMP, a music composition mentoring program. Each episode from the series will air three times during the first week of each month and be archived at VPR.net. The first episode airs today at 11:30 am and 4:00 pm on air and online.
